Apparent failure when documenting the Unix universe

Hi, I’m writing a reference document to unix tools. Which means many times a expression like “~/directory” appears.
I have some sort of markdown implemented into Sublime Text in order to have the syntax highlighted. I wish I knew the exact implementation and version. Thing is, the ~ caracter seems to trigger a beginning tag that will never be closed, hence leaving the next blank line red as a warning:

Is there a way to circumvent this without defacing the document?

Some extensions use the tilde for subscript or strikethrough markup or both (where the latter is doubled). You can backslash-escape it \~/directory or markup all paths as code `~/directory`.
