You raise a good point about preceding whitespace. This could be common when reviewing text. Maybe the {++inserted text++} and {--deleted text--} syntax from MultiMarkdown would be suitable. Or with spaces if need be {++ inserted text ++} and {-- deleted text --}. The curly brackets feel less harsh on the eyes than the backwards angle brackets to me. But maybe review text should stand out if it is temporary.
